We Can!® Celebrates Let's Move's Anniversary and New Partnership
On March 7th, the We Can! team participated in a Let's Move anniversary event, at which the First Lady celebrated the work of faith-based and neighborhood organization leaders who have joined Let's Move! Faith and Communities (LMFC). Just like We Can! sites, these groups are helping their communities ensure that its members learn the importance of making healthy choices.
The event also celebrated We Can!'s partnership with LMFC. The goal of the partnership is to share We Can!'s healthy weight program messages for parents and youth with LMFC's committed national partners and its local neighborhood and faith leaders. Previously, Let's Move! has used We Can!'s information in its offerings, and We Can! is listed as a resource in the current LMFC toolkit.
The March 7th event included several speakers on We Can!, including Caya Lewis, the Counselor to the Secretary for Science and Public Health, Dr. Gary Gibbons, Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and Melissa McGowan and Melinda Kelley, We Can! program managers. The event also included an "instant recess" by Donna Richardson Joyner; an inspiring testimonial to the power of good nutrition from Olympic Gold-medalist Garrett Weber-Gale; a launch of Let's Move Active Schools by Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition; and a presentation of the winning videos from the Communities on the Move video challenge. Last and perhaps most exciting, First Lady Michelle Obama provided a warm and personal closing to the day's festivities.
