Basic Science Departments

 

Gregory Alushin, Ph.D., Tenure-Track Assistant Professor and head of Laboratory, Rockfeller University. Dr. Alushin was a fellow under Dr. Waterman’s lab and became early independent scientist at the NHLBI in his early fellowship. He currently studies how cells respond to mechanical forces at Rockfeller University.

Michael Adams, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, Campbell University School of Pharmacy. Dr. Adams was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Lance Pohl from 2003-2005. His project involved mechanisms of drug-induced liver toxicity. He was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Nathan Baird, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of Sciences, PA. He was a fellow in RAN Biophysics and Cellular Physiology Laboratory the under Dr. Adrian Ferre-D’ Amare from 2011 – 2014. During his fellowship, his research concerned on biophysical and structural techniques to understand how riboswitches control cellular physiology in response to the concentration of metabolites. 

Jianjun Bao, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Wayne State University. Dr. Bao was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Cardiology under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Adelstein from 2002-2006. Her work concerned understanding the roles of cardiac myosin using knockout mice.

Artem Barski, Ph.D.Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Chindren's Hospita. Dr.Barski was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Keji Zhao from 2006-2011. His project involved epigenomics of T cell activation, differentiation, and memory.

Suresh Cuddapah, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, Tuxedo, NY. Dr. Cuddapah was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Keji Zhao from 2002-2010. His project involved epigenomics of T cell activation, differentiation, and memory.

Cynthia Ju, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Immunology and Toxicology, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Colorado. Dr. Ju was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Lance Pohl from 1999-2002. Her research was in the area of immunotoxicology.

Dinari Harris, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Howard University, DC. Dr. Harris was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Imaging under Dr. Justin Taraska from 2011 – 2014. During his fellowship, his research focused on different fluorescent techniques in humans and C. elegans.

Roby Joehanes, Ph.D., Assistant Scientist, Institute for Aging Research, Insructor in Medicine, Department of Medicine Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Hard Medical School. Dr. Joehanes was a fellow in Framingham Heart Study under Dr. Daniel Levy. He is interested in integrating various genome-wide “omics” resources. 

Jeffery Klauda, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Maryland. Dr. Klauda was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2003-2007. His research was on molecular modeling.

Michael Lerner, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Earlham College, Richmond, In. Dr. Lerner was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Pastor from 2007-2011. His research was on molecular modeling.

Amanda Lobell, Ph.D., Assistant Dean and Lecturer at Harvard University, MA. Dr. Lobell was in Laboratory of Systems Genetics under Dr. Susan Harbison from 2012 – 2015. While she was at NHLBI, her research concerned GWAS on phenotypes that impact fitness in Drosophila and the degree to which the genetic architecture of sleep is conserved between Drosophila and humans.

Hongjun Liu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Liu was a Research Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Toren Finkel from 2004-2010. His research concerned the role of wnt signaling in aging. He was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee. He is a recipient of a K99/R00 Pathways to Independence Award.

Zhongping Lu, Ph.D., Research Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Dr. Lu was a fellow in under Dr. Michael Sack from 2005 – 2013. 

Abigail Mabe, Ph.D., Instructor of Biology, Walters State Community College, Morristown, TN. Dr. Mabe was an IRTA Fellow in the Developmental Neurobiology Section under the mentorship of Dr. Herbert Geller in 2009. Her project concerned the role of proteoglycan GAG chains in spinal cord injury.

Edward Mills, Ph.D.,Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Mills was a Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Toren Finkel from 1997-2004. His research involved a molecular approach to understanding the basis of hyperthermia caused by Ecstasy.

Jackob Moskovitz, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dr. Moskovitz was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Earl Stadtmanfrom 1997-2003. His project was understanding how methionine and methionine sulfoxide can protect cells from oxidative damage.

Joon Y. Park, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Kinesiology, Temple University. Dr. Park was a Fellow in the Translational Medicine Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Hwang from 2005 - 2008. His project was to understand the interaction between P53 and mitochondrial respiration.

Takeshi Sakamoto, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Wayne State University. Dr. Sakamoto was a Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Physiology under the mentorship of Dr. James Sellers from 2001-2009. His research project concerned understanding the function of myosins at the single-molecule level. He is the recipient of an NIH K99/R00 Pathways to Independence award. Smita Sampath, Ph.D., Assistant Professor. Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Yale University. Dr. Sampath was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the mentorship of Dr. Eliot McVeighfrom 2004-2007. Her project was to develop methods for real-time cardiac MRI imaging. She was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Lizzie Santiago, Ph.D., Instructor, College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, West Virginia University. Dr. Santiago was a Fellow in the Developmental Neurobiology Section under the mentorship of Dr. Herbert Geller from 2007 -2008. Her project was to understand the role of non-muscle myosins in controlling growth cone dynamics.

Dustin Schones, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Cancer Biology Beckman Research Institute, Duarte, CA. Dr. Schones was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Keji Zhao from 2006-2010. His project involved computational approaches to epigenetics. He was a recipient of an NHLBI K22 Career Transition Award.

Sruti Shiva, Ph.D., Assistant Professor. Department of Pharmacology, University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Dr. Shiva was a Fellow in the Translational Medicine Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Gladwin from 2004-2008. Her project was to understanding the role of nitric oxide in regulating mitochondrial function and the response to ischemia/reperfusion. She was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

George Stan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry, University of Cincinnati. Dr. Stan was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2002-2006. His research was on molecular modeling. He received a FARE award from NIH and was a recipient of a Lenfant Fellowship at NHLBI. He also received an AHA Scientist Development Grant.

Mikiei Tanaka, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor, Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatric Medicine, University of Oklahoma. Dr. Tanaka was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Earl Stadtmanfrom 2000-2008. His project was understanding how methionine and methionine sulfoxide can protect cells from oxidative damage causes aging and cell death.

Zhibin Wang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Wang was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Keji Zhao from 2006-2010. His project involved chromatin modifications in the regulation of gene expression.

Qize Wei, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biology, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Wei was a fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Adelstein from 1997-2004. H. Lee Woodcock, III, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry, University of South Florida. Dr. Woodcock was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2003-2009. His research was on molecular modeling. Hai-Hui Xue, M.D, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Xue was a Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Warren Leonard from 2000-2006. His research concerned the regulation of interleukin 7 receptor alpha-chain gene expression in T cells. He was a recipient of a Lenfant Fellowship at NHLBI. Link to his publications at NHLBI.

Wenjun Zheng, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, University of Buffalo. Dr. Zheng was a Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Computational Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Bernard Brooks from 2003-2007. His research concerned multidimensional molecular dynamic models of protein structure.

Minoo Battiwalla, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine and Oncology, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY. Dr. Battiwalla was a Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of A. John Barrett from 2000-2004. His project was involved with emerging therapeutic and transplant strategies for myelodysplastic syndromes.

Thomas Cimato, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Buffalo. Dr. Cimato was a Fellow in the Cardiology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth Nabel from 2002-2007. His project involved stem cells in cardiovascular disease.

Souheil Y. El-Chemaly, M.D.,Assistant Professor, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. El-Chemaly was a Fellow in the Cardiopulmonary Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Joel Moss from 2005-2011. His project involved basic mechanisms of pulmonary fibrosis.

Peiman Hematti, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology), University of Wisconsin. Dr. Hematti was a Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 1999-2004. His project was involved with modeling human hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy in nonhuman primates.

Cynthia St. Hilaire, Ph.D., Principal Investigator at Pittsburg Heart, Lung and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute. Dr. St. Hilarie was a fellow in under Dr. Manfred Boehm from 2009 – 2015. During her fellowship, she focused on the signaling mechanisms and regulation of endothelial to mesenchymal transition in vascular injury and specific study of EndoMT that occurs in our mouse model of Marfan’s syndrome. 

Moonjung Jung, M.D., Clinical Scholar and Instructor in Clinical Investigation, Rockfeller University.  Dr. Jung was a clinical fellow in Molecular Hematopoeisis Section under Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 2012 – 2016. 

Jason Kovacic, M.D., Assistant Professor, Cardiology, Mount Sinai Medical School, New York. Dr. Kovacic was a Clinical Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch under the mentorship of Manfred Boehm from 2004-2008. His research concerned understanding the role of stem and progenitor cells in cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis.

Sabrina Martyr, M.D., Hematologist & Oncologist with Pinnacle Health Cancer Center in Harrisburg, PA. She was a clinical fellow under Dr. Charles Bolan from 2011 – 2014. Dr. Martyr did an interview about her career with Pinncale Health System in 2015. 

Shyama Masilamani, Ph.D.,Assistant Professor, Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Masilamani was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Knepper from 1997-2004. Her research involved understanding the regulation of the expression of renal transporters. Her research was supported by an NHLBI K22 Research Transition Award.

Anupama Rao, M.D., Cardiologist at Medstar Washington Hospital, DC. Dr. Rao was a clinical fellow in the Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory under Dr. Andrew Arai from 2014 – 2015. Dr. Rao specializes in cardiovascular disease and practices medicine in Washington, D.C. 

Ivan Rosas, M.D.,Lecturer on Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Rosas was a Clinical Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch from 1997-2005. His project involved studies of pulmonary fibrosis. He was a member of the Fellows Advisory Committee.

Bipin Savani, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology-Oncology), Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Savani was a Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. John Barrett from 2003-2007. His project was involved with modeling human hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy in nonhuman primates.

Alexander J. Dick, M.D., Cardiologist, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, Toronto. Dr. Dick was a Clinical Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch from 2001-2003 under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Lederman. Arnold Kristof, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Critical Care Division

Dr. Kristof was a Clinical Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch from 1998-2004 under the mentorship of Dr. Joel Moss. His research concerned the role of nitric oxide in mediating lung injury.

Ian Paterson, M.D., C.M., Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, University of Alberta. Dr. Paterson was a Fellow in the Cardiovascular Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Andrew Arai from 2002-2004. His research involved clinical studies of cardiac MRI.

Richard B. Thompson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton. Dr. Thompson was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics under the supervision of Dr. Eliot McVeigh from 2000-2003.

Ignacio J. Bravo, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, University del Desarrollo. Dr. Bravo was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of Dr. Maurice B. Burg from 2007-2009. His research concerned the role of microRNAs in renal function.

Pedro Gallardo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Dr. Gallardo was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of Dr. Maurice B. Burg from 2005-2007. His research concerned signaling mechanisms in renal function.

China

Yufeng Cheng, M.D., Ph.D., Research Professor, Hematology Deparment, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. Dr. Cheng was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the supervision of Dr. Neal Young from 2004 to 2006. Her research involved studies of parviovirus and aplastic anemia.

Jingqiong Hu, M.D., Associate Professor, Stem Cell Research Center, Wuhan. Dr. Hu was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the supervision of Dr. Cindy Dunbar and in the Laboratory of Developmental Biology under Dr. Yosuke Mukoyama from 2004 to 2009. Her research involved studies of gene therapy and brain/vascular stem cell interactions.

Wenfei Jin, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Biology, SUSTech at Guandong, China. Dr. Jin was a fellow in Laboratory of Epigenome Biology under Dr. Keji Zhao from 2013 – 2017. During his fellowship, he focused on histone moedification and turnover of H2A.Z and H3.3.

Jun Lu, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Beijing Capital Medical University. Dr. Lu was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the supervision of Drs. Kevin Brown and Neal Young from 2002 to 2006. Her research involved studies of parviovirus and aplastic anemia. She was a member of the NHLBI DIR Fellows Advisory Committee. Xin Pan, Ph.D., Associate Investigator, National Center of Biomedical Analysis of China. Dr. Pan was fellow in Dr. Toren Finkel from 2011 – 2014. During his fellowship, he created a knockout mouse model of MCU defining and began phenotypic characterization of mouse and knockout cells.

Jianjun Xie, M.D., Senior Clinician, Beijing Dao-Pei Hospital. Dr. Xie was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the supervision of Dr. Cindy Dunbar from 2007 to 2009. His research involved studies gene therapy vectors.

Kai-Feng Xu, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Peking Union Medical College. Dr. Xu was a Visiting Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch under the supervision of Dr. Martha Vaughan from 2002-2005. His research involved signal transduction pathways involved in vesicular trafficking.

Panpan Yu, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Guandong- Hongkong – Macau Institute of CNS Regeneration, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. Dr. Yu was a fellow in Developmental Neurology Section under Dr. Herbert Geller from 2009 – 2015. 

Denmark

Robert Fenton, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Water and Salt Research Center, University of Aarhus. Dr.Fenton was a Fellow in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Knepper from 2001-2005. His research involved understanding the function of renal ion transporters in regulating salt and water balance. Dr. Fenton received a Lenfant Fellowship for his research accomplishments. Helena Mora-Jensen, Ph.D.Technical Supervisor, Department of Clinical Immunology, University Hospital of Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Mora-Jensen was a visiting fellow in Laboratory of Lymphoid Malignancies under Dr. Adrian Wiestner from 2014 – 2016. During her fellowship, Dr. Mora-Jensen worked on effects of three drugs in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. 

Finland

Kira Holmstrom, Ph.D., Project leader at Institute of Biotechnology in University of Helsinki. Dr. Holmstrom was a fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology under Dr. Toren Finkel from 2012 – 2015. She now aims to fight neurodegeneration by focusing on mitochondrial health. 

Mikko Laukkanen, Ph.D., Group Leader, Medicity Research Laboratory, University of Turku. Dr. Laukkanen was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the direction of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 2002-2005. His work concerned gene therapy of hematopoietic diseases.

France

Benjamin Lelouvier, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer at Vaiomer. Dr. Lelouvier was a fellow in Protein Trafficking and Organelle Biology Laboratory under Dr. Rosa Puertollano from 2008 to 2012. During his fellowship, Dr. Lelouvier focused on protein trafficking.

Berengere Vire, Ph.D., Project Manager at ALCEDIAG. Dr. Vire was a fellow in Laboratory of Lymphoid Malignancies under Dr. Adrian Wiestner from 2006 – 2007. During his fellowship, Dr. Vire focused on studying the effects of resistance to Rituximab (monoclonal anti-CD20) therapy in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients. 

Germany

Ashok Rout, Ph.D., Research Associate at Max Plank Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Germany. Dr. Rout was a fellow in Laboratory of Structural Biophysics under Dr. Nico Tjandra from 2011 – 2016. Currently, he works at Department of NMR-based structural Biology. 

Ruth Seggewiss, M.D., Department of Hematology/Oncology, Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik II, University of Würzburg. Dr. Seggewiss was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar from 2004-2005. Her work concerned gene therapy of hematopoietic diseases.

Hungary

Elfrieda Fodor, Ph.D., Staff Scientist, Institute of Biophysics, Biological Research Centre, Szeged, Hungary. Dr. Fodor was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Cell Biology under the supervision of Dr. Ann Ginsburg from 2003-2007. Her research concerned biophysical approaches to intermolecular interactions.

Mihály Kovács, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Eötvös University, Budapest. Dr. Kovács, was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Physiology under the supervision of Dr. James Sellers from 2002-2005. His research concerned biophysical approaches to intermolec kinetic properties of myosins. Dr. Kovács received a Lenfant Fellowship, and a member of the NHLBI DIR Fellows Advisory Committee. India

Siddhartha Jana, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata. Dr. Jana was a Visiting Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Cardiology under the supervision of Dr. Robert Adelstein from 2002-2007. His research concerned the properties of non-muscle myosins.

Pushpa Shukla, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai University. Dr. Shukla was a visiting fellow at Dr. Nico Tjandra’s lab from 2015 – 2017. During her fellowship, she focused on melanoregulin protein which transfers melanin pigment into skin and hair. 

Indonesia

Indra Bachtiar, Ph.D., Principal Investigator at Stemcell and Cancer Institute, Jakarta, Indonesia. Dr. Bachtiar was aVisiting Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Nico Tjandra from 2001-2005. His research concerned NMR characterization of protein/lipid interactions.

Japan

Hirofumi Arai, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Fisheries Sciences, Nagasaki University. Dr. Arai was a Visiting Fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Branch under the direction of Dr. Joel Moss from 2003-2005. His work concerned the molecular diagnosis of pulmonary disease.

Nanae Harashima, M.D., Ph.D.,Assistant Professor, Department of Immunology, Shimane University School of Medicine. Dr. Harashima was a Visiting Fellow in the Hematology Branch under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Childs from 2005-2007. His work concerned hematopoietic cell transplantation therapies for cancer patients.

Kohei Hosokawa, M.D., Medical Staff and Assistant professor at Kanazowa University, School of Medicine. Dr. Hosokawa was a fellow in Hematology Branch under Dr. Neal Young from 2013 – 2016. Dr. Hosokawa worked on clarifying the immune pathophysiology of bone marrow failure such as aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. 

Yoshihuki Takahashi, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Nagoya University School of Medicine. Rong Zeng, Ph.D., Investigator, Mediummune, Gaithersburg, MD. Dr. Zeng was a Research Fellow in the the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology under the mentorship of Dr. Warren Leonard from 2002-2008. His research concerned Interleukin 21.
