Biography

Dr. Gustavo Matute-Bello is Acting Director, Division of Lung Diseases, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Matute-Bello received his M.D. degree from the Central University of Venezuela. He then completed an internal medicine internship and residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to joining NHLBI in November 2022, Dr. Matute-Bello was Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, investigator at the UW Center for Lung Biology, and Staff Physician at the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System. Dr. Matute-Bello is the author or coauthor of more than 100 scientific publications and abstracts. He has served as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals.
