Programs for Inclusion and Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE)
The Programs for Inclusion and Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) is an all-expense-paid Summer Institute, research education, and mentoring initiative sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This initiative addresses the difficulties experienced by junior investigators and transitioning postdoctoral scientists in establishing independent academic research careers and negotiating through the academic ranks.
What the Program Offers
PRIDE offers hands-on, mentored research lab experiences, small project awards for pilot research, and grant writing courses for junior faculty and transitioning post-doctoral candidates from diverse backgrounds. The goal is to increase diversity in the biomedical research workforce while enabling early career investigators to become competitive independent scientists in heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) research.
Chosen applicants will have their training expenses fully covered for two consecutive summers. Training takes place at nine NHLBI-funded sites across the country, and each program is centered on a different area of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders research:
- Arizona Approaches to equity: Pandemics, Lungs and Sleep (AAPLS)
- Behavioral and Sleep Medicine (BSM)
- Cardiovascular Disease Comorbidities, Genetics and Epidemiology (CVD-CGE)
- Cardiovascular Health-Related Research (CVD)
- Future Faculty of Cardiovascular Sciences (FOCUS)
- Functional and Translational Genomics of Blood Disorders (FTG)
- Health AI and Data Science in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Disease: Application and Bioethics (HARP-BIO)
- Obesity Health Disparities (OHD)
- Research in Implementation Science for Equity (RISE)
Who Can Apply for PRIDE?
Junior faculty who hold doctoral degrees, such as a Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or transitioning post-doctorate trainees, may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are in the biomedical or health sciences. Learn more about who is eligible for PRIDE.
