Headshot of Dr. Marie Egan
NHLBI Celebrates Women Scientists, March 2018

Marie E Egan, M.D.

Description

Dr. Egan is the director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center; the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics and a professor of Pediatrics (Respiratory) and of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale University. Her expertise is in the fields of pediatric pulmonary medicine – asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and cystic fibrosis. In addition to being able to work with both acutely and chronically ill young patients, pediatric pulmonary medicine affords Dr. Egan the opportunity to use a different skill set and explore the scientific underpinnings of respiratory disease. To that end, she is focusing on stem cells, tissue repair and gene editing. She describes her current research project as “molecular glue and scissors". It seeks to replace a mutated portion of DNA found in a majority of cystic fibrosis patients. NHLBI has funded and supported Dr. Egan’s research.
