Reducing salt intake has been shown to lower blood pressure, but researchers studied these changes among more than 200 adults who had varying blood pressure levels. This included adults with normal blood pressure, high blood pressure, and high blood pressure controlled with medication. Regardless of a person’s starting blood pressure, they experienced an average 8 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure after one week on a low-sodium diet – limited to about 500 milligrams of salt each day – compared to a high-sodium diet.
The findings from this NHLBI-supported study published in JAMA and were presented at the American Heart Association’s 2023 Scientific Sessions.
