High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Understanding the condition and how to control and treat it is crucial to prevent these life-threatening conditions.

In a study funded by NHLBI, researchers found that after 15 years on an upward trend, awareness about high blood pressure and how to control and treat it among American adults is now on the decline. Published in JAMA, the study found that a growing percentage of American adults have uncontrolled high blood pressure. The findings suggest that awareness and appropriate treatment are key to lowering blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range to greatly reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
