Postbaccalaureate Research Training at the NHLBI
The goal of the Postbaccalaureate Research at NHLBI is to prepare recent college graduates for a future career in research, either in Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs. Participants join a research laboratory for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. During this time, fellows are expected to submit an application for admission to graduate or professional school.
Applicants must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have graduated from an accredited College within the past two years. Positions are normally filled in the late spring and through the summer. Each laboratory at NHLBI recruits their own fellows. Therefore, potential applicants are urged to contact NHLBI investigators directly explaining their interest in performing research at NHLBI.
In addition to contacting investigators, applications must be submitted online for the Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award, which enters your application into a searchable database. While not absolutely required, priority is given to applicants who have some prior research experience in the area of the laboratory. Applicants without such experience are generally unsuccessful. While applications may be filed at any time, early applications (the beginning of your final semester) are encouraged.
