Description
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is hosting a 1-hour webinar titled “the Relationship between Body Weight, Adiposity, and Cardiovascular Risk among South Asian Americans” on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. EDT.
NHLBI Obesity, Nutrition, and Physical Activity Seminar
In this one-hour webinar, Dr. Namratha Kandula, MD, MPH will present an overview of “The Relationship between Body Weight, Adiposity, and Cardiovascular Risk among South Asian Americans.” Body weight is closely related to several known cardiovascular risk factors, but the relationship between body weight and cardiovascular risk varies by race and ethnicity. In this presentation, Dr. Kandula will focus on South Asian Americans, a population that has a high burden of cardiovascular risk, even at a lower body weight. She will describe the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and subclinical cardiovascular disease in South Asians across body mass index levels. She will introduce the concept of “lean with high metabolic risk’ and illuminate how body composition and adipose tissue may explain this phenomena.
